Course Selection
The information below provides guidance for students in the IDS (major, minor, Area of Concentration) program to assist them with their course selection. Questions about IDS program requirements and IDEV courses should be directed to the IDS Academic Advisor.
IDEV Course Offering Changes
The following IDEV courses are no longer offered and have the following approved substitutions:
- IDEV*2100 — Instead students will take one of: GEOG*2260, POLS*2650, or SOAN*2120
- IDEV*2300 — Instead students will be required take to IDEV*1100
- IDEV*2400 — Instead students will take IDEV*3600
- IDEV*3100 — Instead students will be required to take one of: GEOG*3020, SOAN*3380, or UNIV*2200
- NOTE: GEOG*3020 or UNIV*2200 cannot be double-counted between the ESD area of emphasis and core requirements.
IDS Area of Emphasis Changes in the 24/25 calendar
Area of Emphasis Titles
Some of the titles of the Areas of Emphasis have changed in the 24/25 calendar:
- Development in the Canadian Context has become Inequalities and Social Justice in the Canadian Context
- Development in Fragile Contexts has become Politics and Conflict in Development
Students registered in the 23/24 or earlier calendars will not be affected by this. Your Area of Emphasis title and requirements will remain the same.
Area of Emphasis Restricted Elective Course Options:
You will notice that there are more restricted elective course options in all of the Areas of Emphasis in the 24/25 calendar. You can take any of the additional listed restricted elective courses towards your restricted elective requirements. However, you must email idadvisor@uoguelph.ca in order for these courses to count towards your IDS AoE requirements.
Thesis courses
IDEV*4100, Thesis in International Development Studies I and IDEV*4150, Thesis in International Development Studies II are available in Summer, Fall and Winter Semesters.
