Additional information based on calendar requirements

These guidelines are for students following the 2018-2019 academic calendar or earlier.  For students registered in the ID minor or ID Area of Concentration (BA General Degree) please review additional substitutions.

Planning ahead will go a long way in helping you meet your academic objectives and accomplishing your goals. The information is this guide serves as an academic timeline to help you plan from first year through to graduation for students registered in the ID program who started in the 18/19 academic year or earlier.

NOTE: all substitutions must be approved the ID Advisor. If you are planning to take any substitutions for courses in your IDS major, email the ID Advisor.

ID Major Core Courses substitutions:

  • ECON*2650, Introductory Development Economics: IDEV*3000, Poverty and Inequality, substitutes for ECON*2650.
  • POLS*2080, Development and Underdevelopment, is no longer offered. IDEV*2000, The Development Landscape: Actors and Institutions, substitutes for POLS*2080. If you've taken POLS*2080 you will not be able to register in IDEV*2000. 
  • GEOG*3050, Development in the City, is offered in even winter semesters (ie. W22, W24). If you are in 4th year and require GEOG*3050 to grdaute, you can substitute GEOG*3050 with SOAN*3380, Culture, Nature and Society or EDRD*3400, Sustainable Communities.
  • IDEV*2200, Policy, Economy and Society: Can substitute for ECON*1050 or ECON*1100. Please note that some FARE and ECON restricted electives in the Areas of Emphasis will require ECON*1050 and/or ECON*1100 as prerequisites.
  • IDEV*4500, International Development Seminar (last offering in W22): IDEV*4000, Development in Action (will be offered starting in the 22/23 academic year) substitutes for IDEV*4500.

As part of the International Development core requirements for the major, students are required to complete the following:

  • IDEV*2500 Internationational Development Studies
  • IDEV*3010 Case Studies in International Development or 0.50 credit from relevant field school or exchange program or experience abroad for credit, as approved by International Development advisor

As of Fall 2019, IDEV*2500 and IDEV*3010 will no longer be offered.

What can be used to substitute for IDEV*2500 (W)?

  • Any 2000-level IDEV course, including IDEV*2000, IDEV*2100, IDEV 2300, IDEV*2400 
  • Any 3000-level IDEV course, including IDEV*3000, IDEV*3100, IDEV*3200, IDEV*3300, IDEV*3400, IDEV*3500

What can be used to substitute for IDEV*3010 (F)?

  • A development-focused course (0.50 credit) completed while on field school, exchange or other study abroad program (approval by ID advisor required)
  • A 0.50 credit obtained through an independent study course or community-engaged learning experience for credit that has a development focus, in Canada or abroad (e.g. ICON course, UNIV 3000) (approval by ID advisor required)
  • Field trip courses that have a development focus
  • Any 3000-level IDEV course including IDEV*3000, IDEV*3100, IDEV*3200, IDEV*3300, IDEV*3400, IDEV*3500

As part of the course requirements for the area of emphasis, students must take: "0.50 additional credits with a regional focus at the 2000 level or above in ANTH, GEOG, HIST, HUMN, IDEV, ISS, POLS, SOAN or SOC."

ANTH*3670, Indigenous Peoples: Global Context is no longer offered. ANTH*3650, Anthropology of Indigenous Peoples before Canada (F) substitutes for ANTH*3670. 

ANTH*3400 is no longer offered. 

POLS*3160, Women and Politics in the Third World is now called Global Gender Justice (F).

 There are no additional requirements for the Gender and Development area of emphasis. Please see your academic calendar for the full requirements.

As part of the Rural and Agricultural Development (RAD) area, students are required to take 1.00 additional credits in AGR, BIOL, BOT, CROP, ENVS, HORT, NRS or OAGR, at least 0.50 being at the 3000-level or above.
