A Path Forward: A Public Discussion of Anti-Racism at GIDS

With its Statement of Solidarity and the formation of the Anti-Racism Working Group in June 2020, the Guelph Institute of Development Studies (GIDS) set out on a path of understanding and reckoning. This report (A Path Forward: Anti-Racism Working Group Report) documents how racism and discrimination negatively impact the lives of Black, Indigenous, and racialized students, staff, and faculty within GIDS and the broader university. The public release of this report brings one phase of this process to a conclusion, and it is certainly an important first step.

Hopper Lecture Ft. Dr. Naila Kabeer

Dr. Naila Kabeer is Professor of Gender and International Development at the Department of International Development at London School of Economics, UK.  Throughout her career, she has engaged in research, teaching and advisory work on issues related to gender, poverty, livelihoods, social protection and collective action.

February 2023 Earthquake in Turkey and Syria: Lessons to be Learned

Dr. Altinkas will discuss how lack of infrastructure and state capacity hampered the official response to the earthquake, and how a civilian network helped fill in the gaps. He will also share insights from the 1999 Golcuk earthquake, which he experienced personally, and draw comparisons with more recent events.
